The Ultimate Guide to Designing Your Perfect Custom L-Shaped Desk

An L-shaped desk is more than just furniture—it is a command center. By utilizing the corner of your room, you can effectively double your workspace without taking over the entire floor plan. It is the perfect solution for multi-monitor setups, separating "computer work" from "paperwork," or simply creating an executive feel in a home office.
At My-Desk.Co, we build custom L-shaped desks that fit your specific room layout. But before we cut the wood, there are a few technical details you need to decide on. We have created the guide below to walk you through them.
Step 1: Determine Your Custom L-Shaped Desk Orientation
The most common mistake? Ordering the "L" on the wrong side! The orientation is defined by the position of the Return(the shorter section) when you are seated at the desk.
Left-Hand Return: The extension is on your left side.
Right-Hand Return: The extension is on your right side.
Decision Tip: Look at your room layout—where are the power outlets? Which side do you want open for easy access?
Step 2: Choose Your Corner Style
How do you want to sit?
90-Degree (Standard): Two straight edges meeting at a sharp corner. This is best if you plan to face one specific "wing" of the desk while working.
Curved Middle (Ergonomic): We carve a smooth radius into the inner corner. This allows you to sit right in the "crook" of the L, giving you a massive, wraparound reach to both sides of the desk.
Step 3: One Plank vs. Merged (The "Seamless" Rule)
This is a crucial detail for solid wood lovers.
Merged (Standard): Most L-shaped desks are made of two separate rectangular planks joined together. This allows for almost any size configuration.
Single Solid Plank: If you want your L-shape cut from one continuous piece of wood (with no visible joint line), the entire footprint must fit within 244cm x 122cm. This is limited by the maximum size of our raw timber slabs.
Step 4: Select Your Support System
Your custom corner desk can be built on three different frame types:
Fixed Height: Classic sturdy steel legs or wooden frames for a permanent setup.
Sit/Stand: Requires a specific 3-motor frame to ensure the entire surface lifts evenly and silently.
Wall Mounted: Great for small rooms to keep the floor clear, but requires a very sturdy load-bearing wall.
