In short: In Chinese tradition, 8 is linked with wealth and 9 with longevity, while 4 is often avoided because it sounds like the word for death. Because a custom piece is built to your measurements, you can choose dimensions that follow a number meaningful to you, as long as they still suit your room and the way you work.
In the realm of design, every detail holds significance. From the curvature of a chair to the colour palette of a room, each element contributes to the overall ambiance and energy. At My-Desk.Co, we understand the impact that even the smallest numerical detail can have on your space. That's why we specialise in customising tables, desks, shelves and more, so that every number is correct for your space and, if you wish, carries a meaning that matters to you.
Why numbers matter in custom furniture
In many cultures, certain numbers hold deep symbolism and are believed to influence various aspects of life, including luck and prosperity. Whether you're a firm believer in the principles of Feng Shui or simply appreciate the power of intention, choosing auspicious numbers for your custom furniture can add an extra layer of meaning and positivity to your environment.
When it comes to customising furniture, precision is key. Every inch matters, and numbers play a crucial role in ensuring that your piece fits seamlessly into its intended space. From the dimensions of a dining table to the height of a bookshelf, we build each piece to your specifications, starting from the practical measurements and, if you ask, a number that is meaningful to you.
Auspicious numbers in Chinese tradition
In Feng Shui, certain numbers are considered especially auspicious and are believed to attract good fortune and positive energy. For example:
Number Eight (八): Highly regarded in Chinese culture, the number eight sounds similar to the word for wealth and prosperity, making it a popular choice for businesses and households alike.
Number Nine (九): Associated with longevity and completion, the number nine holds special significance in Chinese culture and is often used in auspicious occasions like weddings and housewarmings.
Numbers in other Asian cultures
Similarly, other cultures in Asia also ascribe meaning to certain numbers:
Number Four (四): In some East Asian cultures, such as Chinese and Japanese, the number four is considered unlucky because it sounds similar to the word for death. As a result, it is often avoided in addresses, phone numbers, and other aspects of daily life.
Number Six (육): In Korean culture, the number six is associated with success and prosperity, making it a popular choice for businesses and individuals alike.
Building a number into your design
Because we build to your measurements, you can choose dimensions that follow a number you consider auspicious, such as a width or height that includes an 8, as long as they still suit your space and the way you work. Whether you're looking to create a harmonious workspace or a serene sanctuary, we'll build to the numbers you choose. See our custom desks for the kinds of pieces we make.
But meaning goes beyond the numbers themselves. Feng Shui also holds that the placement and arrangement of furniture can profoundly impact the flow of energy within a space, influencing everything from mood to productivity. Our Complete Desk Feng Shui Guide covers placement, and feng shui desk placement and customisation looks at size, wood, colour and shape together.
In today's fast-paced world, it's more important than ever to create spaces that nurture our well-being and support our goals. By harnessing the power of auspicious numbers and customising your furniture to fit your unique needs, you can elevate your environment and invite greater harmony and fortune into your life.
